Laat Trump, Poetin en Merkel voor wie ze zijn. Wat als studenten een natie zouden leiden en de onderhandelingen voerden op het hoogste politieke niveau? Dat is Model United Nations in een notendop. Van 9 tot 12 maart vormt het Hof van Liere weer het decor voor bevlogen redevoeringen, duistere achterkamerpolitiek en een bende briljante studenten, de wereldleiders van morgen. Ze onderhandelen er over hete hangijzers uit de internationale politiek, maar ook aan de obligate diplomatieke feestjes wordt gedacht.

So as the end of this years AntwerpMUN is coming to an end. It is with mixed feelings I am starting this day. On one hand I woke up with a great deal of energy I’ve accumulated the past four days, but on the other hand I feel sad because this AMAZING adventure is, as mentioned before, coming to an end.
Todays session started off two hours later than the previous days, since the organization was mercyfull on all of us, giving us a chance of recuperating after last nights lustrum gala party. In which, I must say, some interesting alliances have been formed by the delegates plus some of the delegates tried, but not always succeeded, in strengthening their diplomatic relationships with other countries, or with their delegates.
Maybe it is also worth mentioning that today, also marks the jewish carnival day called ‘Purim’, in which it is customary to dress up and party around (so yes, I’ve missed some of the parties due to the simple fact of my commitment to the AntwerpMUN and the General Assembly, for which I am ready to receive my nobel prize anytime.)
That being said, I brought a traditional jewish cookie (which is customary to consume on jewish carnival), for each and every one of the delegates, the honorable chairs and the AntwerpMUN staff.
That being said, the negotiations and discussions for working points and amendments on working papers are clearly moving to its last and final stage where most of the points for the draft resolutions are already agreed upon and in which the draft resolutions start getting to form shape.
During the first half of the day the delegate of the second biggest nuclear power was absent due to what he calls “Urban Trail duties”, but what's important is that at the end he actually showed up for the second half of the day so we could all finalize the draft resolutions.
Because today is also Purim I thought: “Why don't I try and combine both things?”
And what better way in doing so than to ‘dress up’ as our beloved President, Donald J. Trump, which is exactly what I did. After an agreement with the delegate of the United States at the Security Council we decided to just wear a custom Donald J. Trump wig, in which we on the one side we were still taking part in the Model United Nations as delegates of the United States, and on the other side were joining somehow in the Purim festivities by having a Trump wig on.
At the end of the day I’m happy to see that we all voted and agreed upon passing most of the resolutions, one after the other.
I must say that it was my utmost honor and privilege to attend the AntwerpMUN 2017 as the delegate of the United States of America for the United Nations General Assembly. I’ve met lots of new great people, made a lot of new friends and last but (definitely) not least, I had a blast the past couple of days!
To sum it all up, AntwerpMUN 2017 was a great success!!!

Zondagochtend had de Russische delegatie diplomatieke verplichtingen buiten de MUN, dus moest ik erop vertrouwen dat de Chinese delegatie onze punten sterk genoeg zou vertegenwoordigen. Australië had onze working paper geïntroduceerd als draft resolution, wat onverwacht voordelig was aangezien de working paper een erg Russisch-Chinese kleur had op zowat alle issues. Ik vraag me af of de andere delegaties dat niet opgemerkt hebben en waarom ze daar geen probleem van gemaakt hebben.
In tussentijd kreeg ik nu en dan berichten van andere delegaties, die me waarschuwden dat verschillende kleinere landen vandaag erg actief hun meer vooruitstrevende agenda aan het pushen waren.
Teruggekomen na de middagpauze, bleek er inderdaad werk aan de winkel. Hoewel ik dacht dat ik met China een duidelijk gemeenschappelijk standpunt had ingenomen over een no-first-use-policy (landen die aangeven dat ze nooit als eerste kernwapens zouden gebruiken in een conflict), bleek dat China ons resultaat toch niet verregaand genoeg vond. Jammer genoeg voor de Chinese delegatie, waarmee ik erg constructief had kunnen samenwerken, was het standpunt zoals we hadden afgesproken het enige waarmee Rusland akkoord kon gaan. Na wat semantische wijzigingen in het artikel, raakte China toch nog overtuigd.
Daarnaast waren verschillende kleinere landen inderdaad ontevreden met de stappen die we gezet hadden naar nucleaire ontwapening. Ik werd bij mijn terugkomst beetgegrepen door de delegatie van Ierland, die me een concreet schema voorstelde om nucleaire wapenvoorraden terug te schroeven. Ik was verrast, aangezien ik de voorbije dagen duidelijk had gemaakt dat Rusland verschillende randvoorwaarden heeft die vervuld moeten zijn voor er weer substantieel ontwapend kan worden. Met nog anderhalf uur tijd voordat onze resolutie klaar moest zijn, kon ik de Ierse delegatie dan ook overtuigen dat het niet realistisch was om dit nog volledig onderhandeld en bediscussieerd te krijgen.
In ruil hebben we in de draft resolution wel een clausule opgenomen die alle nucleaire staten vraagt om regelmatig samen te zitten over de problematiek van nucleaire ontwapening en het de-escaleren van nucleaire wapens die op high alert staan.
Na wat kleinere discussies, die niet veel concreet resultaat meer opleverden, werd begonnen aan de stemming. Alle artikels werden met een overgrote meerderheid goedgekeurd. De uiteindelijk resolutie is er één waarin Rusland veel meer haar zin heeft gekregen dan ik had verwacht. De resolutie bevat ons standpunt over missile defense systems en over conventionele en nucleaire wapens in de ruimte. Ze maant de NAVO aan om haar nucleaire sharing mission in niet-nuclaire staten stop te zetten én bevat bovendien woord per woord het Russische standpunt voor een non-first-use policy.
De AntwerpMUN bleek een erg interessant forum waarin heel wat delegaties die in het begin stiller waren, erg vocaal werden tegen het einde van de sessies. Het is me gelukt om de debatprocedures optimaal te gebruiken om het Russische standpunt door te drukken. Ik ben erg benieuwd naar hoe de Verenigde Staten de resolutie evalueren, want ik heb niet het gevoel dat ze op veel punten hun slag thuis hebben gehaald.

Our third day ended with a very galant ball. I invited other delegates of the European Council to enjoy some beverages before we headed to the gala. I think I can speak for all when I say that we enjoyed an amazing night. Luckily our fourth and last day of committee sessions started later in order for us tol catch some more z’s and get back to work with a clear mind.
Today we discussed and reviewed our final resolution. In order to eradicate everyone’s hungover we all went out for lunch and devoured some pizzas. There was an overall very amiable atmosphere, it was clear that many delegates greatly got along. Upon return we continued to our last committee session.
After some friendly and unfriendly amendments, some technical spelling and grammar checks we could finally applaud on the finalisation of our resolution: The European Council, guided by the equal pay principle of the Treaty of Rome, acknowledged the need for more female participation in the labour market. In our resolution we state that we are aware that gender stereotypes are still prevalent in the EU as proven by sexist public statements of some EU officials. Therefor we note with approval the efficiency of the EIGE in combatting these issues, recognising the effect of the lack of border control on the problem of human trafficking. Finally we stress the need for cooperation between private sector and government on National and European level.
After our final session we moved ahead to the closing ceremony. Awards were granted, speeches were orated and then the president of AntwerpMUN, Fritjof Lucke, could close our four-day adventure. The president of Romania wants to personally congratulate all delegates for their inspiring input during these last four days. I also want to congratulate the head of State of Luxembourg, Stefaan Mertens, for his award for best delegate – Amber De Lee, head of State of Spain, awarded for best position paper and Aimé Schrauwen, Prime Minister of Belgium for his honourable mention. Now I will have to return to my amazing home country, Romania. I can say without a doubt that I am looking forward to next year’s AntwerpMUN.

We have reached a consensus! Dit is de prachtige slotsom die vandaag heeft bestempeld. De dagenlange debatten, discussies, motions, enzovoort hebben hun vruchten afgeworpen, met als resultaat een conclusie waar we allen trots op mogen zijn. Allemaal voor gendergelijkheid, maar toch op verschillende manieren. Progressieve landen versus conservatieve landen, oost versus west, laat het voor eens en voor altijd duidelijk zijn, het is géén verdeeld verhaal, maar een verenigd verhaal. Op welke manier dan ook, we streven met z’n allen naar hetzelfde doel: genderongelijkheid uit de wereld helpen. Het belang van een open communicatie tussen Europol en de lidstaten is voor Slovenië een belangrijk punt. Het is contraproductief dat wij met onze nationale ‘joint investigation teams’ mensenhandel proberen op te lossen, Hongarije hetzelfde doet, maar ook apart, net als Roemenië enzovoort. We zouden beter met elkaar communiceren en een échte joint investigation voeren. Mensenhandel beperkt zich immers niet tot landsgrenzen, dus waarom zouden wij dat dan wel doen? Dit is dan ook uitgebreid opgenomen in de conclusie waardoor Slovenië met een positief, geïnspireerd gevoel voor het voorstel heeft kunnen stemmen.
Laten we eerlijk zijn, Slovenië had nooit kunnen denken dat vandaag zo’n productieve dag zou worden, aangezien verscheidene landen, waaronder Slovenië zelf, gisteren op het gala de dansbenen volledig hebben losgelaten op de dansvloer tot in de vroege uurtjes. De pizza die wij allemaal verorberd hebben deze middag zal daar ook wel voor een deel mee te maken hebben.
Slovenië draagt alle landen een warm hart toe en kijkt al uit naar de volgende AntwerpMUN-editie voor een vervolg van deze prachtige samenwerking.
