Net als bij het lijstje van boeken die iedereen gelezen moet hebben, ligt ook de canon van first-person shooters in het hoofd van iedere gamer grotendeels vast. Er zijn natuurlijk goede redenen om de Half-Lifes, Call of Duty’s en andere Wolfensteins van deze wereld in het digitale Pantheon op te nemen, maar het nadeel van deze veelal onuitgesproken vooringenomenheid is dat minstens even indrukwekkende titels als Timeshift, Call of Juarez of Singularity wel systematisch in de vergeethoek belanden. Met wat slechte wil valt bovendien zelfs het verafgode Half-Life ook maar een spel te noemen dat is vastgelopen in het moeras van een veel te ingewikkeld plot, met Portal als enige reddingsboei. Het ooit zo plezante Call of Duty is dan weer verworden tot een multiplayer voor pre-adolescenten dat elk jaar langs de kassa moet passeren om in leven te blijven. Het is met andere woorden, net als bij films of boeken, soms wel goed om even verder te kijken dan de platgetreden canon … naar Singularity bijvoorbeeld.
